板藍根三才蓋碗

Introducing Tian Feng's Indigo Gaiwans – Back by popular demand after a sold-out debut four years ago, we are thrilled to present the second limited batch of these exquisite teaware pieces at the beginning of 2024.

In 2020, Rui collaborated with her native Buyi friend, Tian Feng 天峰, an artisan from Duyun Guizhou and is now crafting his kiln's magic in Jing De Zhen. United by their shared journeys away from home, they envisioned a teaware collection steeped in the nostalgia of their beloved Guizhou. Harnessing the minerals from Guizhou, Tian Feng skillfully blended them to create the stunning indigo hue that beautifully complements the interior texture and colour traditionally found in Buyi or Miao households.

What sets this Gaiwan apart is its emotional significance and aesthetic appeal with minimalist finish and practical design. The substantial bottom of the Gaiwan imparts a reassuring weight, offering a secure grip for both holding and pouring. The glazed, minimalistic interior transforms the brewing process into a visual feast. Placed upon the accompanying dish, the Gaiwan transforms into an elegant piece of functional art.

Derived from its formal name, Sān Cái Gài Wân 三才蓋碗, (三才 “3 Virtues”), each element embodies a virtue – the lid symbolises the universal oneness or the sky (), the dish represents grounding earth (), and the tea bowl (Wân) signifies humans (). Our ancestors' teachings convey the wisdom of cultivating one's capacity akin to the Three Virtues, Gai Wan – the vastness of all elements. May this vessel serve as a container for your favourite teas and your vision and love for your community.

Cultural Tradition

We cannot share Guizhou culture without mentioning the indigo dyeing practice. Using the native indigo plants, the dyeing art typically involves honey wax drawn onto cotton fabric and then dried in an indigo container; the Buyi and Miao people are best known for this craft.
