Rui has asked her native Buyi friend Tian Feng, who grew up near Duyun Guizhou and now runs his kiln in Jing De Zhen, to create a home inspired teaware collection for GPT. We are excited to celebrate and share the joy and vibrancy of indigenous culture in Guizhou. As for the deep Buyi blue color of this special piece, we cannot talk about Guizhou without mentioning the indigo dyeing practice. Inspired by the colours of the mountains and water, nature provided our ancestors the native indigo plants.
Using honey wax to draw onto cotton fabric and then dry in the indigo container, the Buyi and Miao people are best known for this craft. Combining minerals found in Guizhou, Tian Feng has mixed them to reflect the rich, vibrant indigo colour, complementing the inside texture and colour traditionally featured in any Buyi or Miao household. We look forward to sharing these pieces near and dear to us and hope you can pass on the historical and cultural context this teaware serves.
