The virtual Master's Tea House by Grass People Tree is the extended arm of the original Master's Tea House in Guizhou, China, historically known as "The Temple of Awakening" 大觉精舍. Throughout centuries, knowledge, tradition and culture has been passed down over many sips of tea, we would like you to take part in sharing further this essence of the Tea House, from our home region to yours.
In Chinese there are three parts to the word “tea”, “茶”: “Grass” sits at the top; “Tree” forms the bottom; and “people” sit in between.
The word originated with our ancestors 2,200 years ago, of the understanding that tea narrates the moment when “all (three elements) become one”. Hundreds of tribes who have called the inaccessible mountains of Guizhou home before us, their craft of tea is a heartfelt tribute to the nature they breathe with. Far from a commodity, tea has always been part of nature, a celebration of diversity and a reflection of humanity.
When we consider the three essences of tea, we find the following guiding principles in creating a tea culture that respects tea’s home in Guizhou:
Foundation/Root
The foundation or root, 草 asks us to discover the traditions, fundamentals, and cultural truths that are ancient wisdom. How do we know a tea without knowing its root? We aim to uncover and reveal this insight.
Self & Others
Turning both inward and to others, 人 asks us to rediscover our roots, listen to our body and intuition. Culture is passed down, evolving through storytelling and we continue this tradition.
Community
Just as the roots of trees 木 are deeply intertwined together in growth, we as a community flourish. Open discussions, cultural experiences, and excursions into the heart of wild tea trees in Guizhou are a few of the experiences we extend to you in the spirit of this essence.

learn moreWe believe that sharing plays a vital role in closing the gap between the perceived differences and the mutual experience of humanity. And we believe that a Tea House can do just that.
Our mission is to encourage much-needed conversation and connection in-depth and breadth within individuals, between individuals and for their local community. We do this by partnering with friends across London and by transforming their space into the Tea House: an open, safe and inspiring environment that reflects their vision and empowers their community to come together, be themselves and do great things.
