A wild-harvested green tea crafted from ancient and indigenous purple-leaf Tái tea trees in Shiqian (石阡), Guizhou, using traditional methods carried forward today by the Rao family and tea master Rao Deng Xiang.
Picked around the Qing Ming season in the classic one-bud, one-leaf just-opening standard (一芽一葉初展), this harvest captures the vivid freshness and sweetness deeply treasured in traditional green tea-making within the Gelao communities across Guizhou. Yet unlike many modern single-bud green teas, Wild Green Tái also carries more depth, structure, and longevity, owing to the vitality of the ancient Tái tea trees and the precision required to time the harvest.
Tái tea trees are especially known for their purple-tinged leaves and naturally high levels of antioxidants, amino acids, and minerals, qualities shaped by centuries of adaptation within the mountain ecosystems of Shiqian. Historically treasured both as tea and medicine, these indigenous tea trees produce a liquor that feels remarkably vivid, clear and nourishing on the body.
For tea makers, the Qing Ming harvest window is everything. If the leaves are picked too early, the tea lacks fullness. Too late, and the delicacy and freshness begin to fade. Storms, sudden rain or strong mountain winds can alter the harvest overnight. To recognise the exact moment when the leaves are ready — and to respond before nature changes course again — requires years of observation, sensitivity and experience.
The tea opens with a vivid freshness (鮮) and clear returning sweetness (甜), followed by layers of wildflowers, mountain herbs and a deep mineral softness that slowly unfolds through more than 10 re-infusions. Even when brewed stronger, the tea remains remarkably smooth and lively on the palate, without the sharp bitterness or lightheadedness many people associate with modern green tea.
Tái tea has long held cultural significance among the Gelao people of Shiqian. Deeply connected to local rituals, ancestral memory, and mountain life, these ancient tea trees continue to be protected and passed down through the remaining tea-making families in the region.
Among them, the Rao family carries particular importance. The younger Rao brother, Rao Deng Xiang, is regarded as one of the leading figures shaping how traditional Tái tea craftsmanship continues into the present day. A multi-award-winning tea maker, his work reflects not only technical mastery but also the continuation of knowledge passed down through generations, including from Grandma Rao, whose life and tea practice remain deeply woven into the story of Shiqian Tái tea.
For us, Wild Green Tái carries a rare balance between the delightful lushness of spring and the enduring, grounded presence of ancient tea trees. Its simplicity is expressed through the sheer joy it brings to daily life, while its profundity lies in the glimpse it offers into a living indigenous tea culture that continues quietly among the mountains of Guizhou today.

Tai tea has an infusion extract of 46% (a good quality whole-leaf infusion is around 32%). Tai teas are packed with much more nutrients than other teas – including vitamins, anthocyanin (a natural anti-oxidant) and minerals such as Ka, Zinc and Selenium."

Really coats the mouth....I think they call it an umami flavour. It's almost like a Sencha ...very aromatic..truly delightful
The immediate grassy freshness of the first brew, transforms gradually - patience is your reward, as the barley milkiness of later infusions is very unexpected and quite a long way from the initial flavour - but well worth the effort of arriving at its mildly roasted, almost oat milk like taste profile.
I’ve always been sensitive to caffeine which is why I’ve preferred tea over coffee but as I’ve gotten older sometimes even tea puts me out. I can drink this all day long and I feel amazing! Not to mention the quality and flavor of this tea beats out any other tea I’ve had. I’m a big fan of masters green because I’d the floral non bitter taste by the wild green tai has that grassy green flavor im used.
First of all, this tea was simply DELICIOUS! It really captures what supreme green tea should be like: deeply aromatic, sweet, and full-textured. I tend to prefer greens with notes of nuts and grains more so than fruits, and this tea delivers on both ends very much to my taste.
About hormone-related symptoms: though nowadays I mostly drink darker teas, lately I haven't been craving them so much as I've been getting really intense hot-flashes, headaches, and tiredness and needed something else.
I decided to give Wild Green Tai a try and it has brought me SO much relief. The anti-inflammatory effect of it has really helped with headaches and its cooling effect – even when drank hot — has been wonderful at keeping the hot flashes away. The tea also has helped me get through the morning hump these past few days without triggering anxiety or nausea which I always careful about too.
Definitely a tea worth keeping in your cupboard for those hotter days, as well as when your body needs a hand managing malaise. Really recommend getting some of the Wild Red Tai counterpart too for when you need warmth and comfort!
