Spiral Maple Batik Table Runner
A cloth that carries time, protection, and the memory of hands. Handwoven, beyond-organic table runner cotton textile from Guizhou, rooted in Miao tradition. Free worldwide shipping.
Woven slowly on traditional wooden handlooms, drawn by hand, and dyed through layers of patience, this table runner comes from southeastern Guizhou — made by our longtime collaborators and friends of Yanzi (Shui people), working alongside Miao artisans whose batik and indigo textile traditions have also been passed down through generations.
At its centre is the spiral maple motif, a pattern rooted in Miao cosmology. The Butterfly Mother — regarded as the ancestor of life — is said to have emerged from within the sacred maple tree, from which all living beings follow. Because of this, both the maple and spiral forms appear across Miao batik as expressions of life, protection, and continuity and are believed to carry an abundance of blessings and auspiciousness.

- Natural variations in line, tone and texture — a reflection of the maker’s hand and the nature of the process
Dimensions
- 185 cm × 40 cm
- 250 cm × 40 cm
- Slight variations may occur due to handcraft
Uses
- A table runner for tea tables or shared meals, bringing warmth and groundedness to daily moments

- A protective wrap for larger teaware
- A thoughtful gift, carrying meanings and symbols of protection, continuity and liveliness
The Miao people of Guizhou are known for a long-standing textile tradition where cloth carries memory, identity, and belief. Historically, in the absence of a widely used written language, patterns and garments became a way of recording stories and lineage.
Each line is drawn slowly by hand with a wax knife, guided by the grandmothers who have carried this practice through generations. Beeswax is laid onto the cloth, then dyed with shuliang (薯莨) bark, the process repeating itself in patient cycles until the fabric settles into its final depth.

Cultural Significance
Batik (蜡染), especially indigo dyeing, is one of the most established crafts of the Miao, Buyi, Yi, and Shui peoples in Guizhou. Using beeswax and hand tools, artisans draw directly onto cloth before dyeing — a process that preserves pattern through resistance. Each mark is deliberate, and each variation reflects the hand of the maker.
In the Miao creation story, the Butterfly Mother is regarded as the ancestor of life and is said to have emerged from a maple tree. From her came the generations that followed — humans, animals, and spirits. Because of this, both the butterfly and the maple tree appear consistently in Miao textiles — not as decoration, but as expressions of origin and continuity.
Spiral motifs, such as those seen in this piece, are often associated with cycles of life, time, and ancestral lineage. Their placement within the cloth forms part of a visual language shaped over generations.
Alongside textile-making, Miao communities in Guizhou have long practised herbal knowledge and nature-based belief systems, in which land, plants, and living beings are understood in relation rather than in isolation.
